The walk on glass floor is composed of triple-laminated structural glass panels, designed to carry loads safely across a circular span. Each layer is bonded using high-strength interlayers to resist impact and shear, providing exceptional durability and redundancy.
Beneath the structural layer, a double-glazed unit contributes thermal insulation and acoustic separation, while maintaining a visually clear cavity. Within this cavity, a stainless steel laser-cut grill is suspended — serving as both a functional and aesthetic component. The grill’s geometry introduces a play of light and shadow that animates the surface throughout the day.

Walk on glass floors over archaeological displays
JORVIK VIKING CENTRE, YORK
At the Viking Exhibition Display, a floating walk-on structural glass floor was installed above the archaeological display to provide visitors with a unique overhead viewing experience while preserving the artifacts below.
The system was engineered using triple-laminated, toughened safety glass panels, supported on discreet stainless steel upstandsthat create the illusion of the glass floating above the exhibit. The upstands were precision-fabricated to maintain exact tolerances, ensuring uniform load transfer and a clean, minimal aesthetic. Beneath the glass, the Viking display remains fully visible, illuminated by integrated LED lighting that enhances both depth and detail without casting reflections or glare onto the surface. The non-slip, low-iron glass specification offers maximum optical clarity and safety, allowing visitors to walk directly over the historical artifacts with complete confidence.
This installation elegantly combines structural glass engineering with museum-grade display design, preserving the integrity of the exhibit while providing an immersive, modern viewing platform.
LIDL, DUBLIN, IRELAND
A series of walk-on structural glass floors were installed to create a visually striking connection between the modern retail space and the archaeological remains preserved beneath. The installation formed part of a unique architectural concept that allows shoppers to view historic structures through the floor while moving through the store. Each glass panel was fabricated from triple-laminated, toughened safety glass with a high-load specification, designed to accommodate constant public foot traffic in compliance with commercial safety standards.
The glass units were set within stainless steel perimeter frames with flush joints. Integrated lighting beneath the glass enhances visibility of the excavation area below without creating glare or reflection on the surface.
This project showcases the versatility of walk-on glass technology, combining robust engineering with cultural preservation to deliver an engaging and educational in-store experience.
